Tips When Choosing A Domain Name
Your domain name is extremely important and your identity on the Internet. We offer these tips when choosing the name that will represent you or your business online.
Keep it short if you can. Keep in mind that people need to be able to remember it and type it into their browser. Try to register the shortest name that your customers will identify with your business.
Dot What? We recommend a .com if possible. It is the first extension that most people try when searching for a website. Also depending on your budget we suggest you tie up .org and .net when possible to keep your competition from registering them and pointing them to their website.
Characters Allowed. Domain names can only use letters, numbers, and dashes. Spaces and symbols are not allowed.
When you have found a few names that are available, see what your friends and clients think. A name that may make sense to you may be too hard for people to remember. Is your domain easy to say? Does it have other words in it that aren’t desired? Is it hard to spell? Do you have to explain the name?
If you can’t find your business name, try searching for what you do. It maybe difficult to find the domain you are looking because many of the good names have been bought. Surprisingly you may find searching www.ebay.com or GoDaddy Auctions for domains. If you find the one you like we can help you handle it from there.
Always make sure your DOMAIN NAME IS REGISTERED IN YOUR NAME. We have seen a number of times when web designers have held people hostage for their domain names when they have decided to move on to a different web designer. So it is very important that your domain name is in your name with your email address.
